Darnley Fisheries, Wakefield

The Chip Fiends had heard great things about this little chippy so we had to investigate. We took a 20 minute walk from Wakefield town centre for our early evening takeaway.

Darnley Fisheries is in a residential area and it was pretty obvious that the owners knew all their clientele - chatting away merrily about house moves and other business as they briskly served chips (and scraps) into styrofoam trays.

The Chip Fiends ordered haddock and chips open and were astonished to find this only cost £3.60!

Looking at our photos you might be mistaken in thinking the chips were overcooked. They weren't. They were fried to a dark colour but were still soft and floppy, and full of flavour. Some had a slight hint of skin on them, and this added to our enjoyment. They had a lovely homemade quality to them.

The fish was as we like it. Large, moist flakes and light, crispy batter.

There's a small table and bench directly outside the shop and one table inside too. If you're local, you could sit inside and chat to the owners.
