Hello Zan Fish, Spondon

Zan Fish have a great chain of chippies local to the suburbs of Derby. For those of you who do not remember, the Chip Fiends visited this spot last year when it was known as Carlo's Catch. This chippy is also part of the Trent Barton i4 bus route (at the Spondon Lodge Lane stop) and would have featured in our chippy crawl if it had not been undergoing renovation at the time.

Unlike some Zan outlets this one is too small to include a restaurant but there are three small tables inside if you wish to eat under cover.

We imagine that most of the clientele here would take their orders home to eat, and there is ample parking space outside for this purpose. Incidentally there is a 'family meal' at £16.95 that includes 2 large fish, 2 fish cakes or sausages, 1 large portion of chips, 4 sides (peas, beans, curry...) and a 1 litre bottle of coke.

On this visit, the Chip Fiend had a mini fish, chips and peas special for £4.50, and took the food out to eat at the nearby bus stop.

The medium to chunky chips were cut very long. Melt in the mouth delicious. The fish was also tasty but showed signs of having stood a while - enough to make the batter lose its crispness. The peas were good if a little over-dyed! This was a bargain meal with a very generous portion of chips.

The normal size haddock comes very large and is also good VFM at £4.50. Some were being loaded into the cabinet, looking very tempting, but I knew I would not have managed to eat one of those on my own! The Chip Fiends will visit another branch at some point to try out a Zan restaurant. We are sure it'll be great.
