George's Fish and Chip Kitchen

George's is a spectacular restaurant that opened in Nottingham in early 2015. Complete with booths shaped like traditional beach huts, this is clearly an eatery that combines its impressive menu with a cheeky sense of seaside fun.

The Chip Fiends visited for lunch and found the place to be very busy. It is probably better to book in advance if you want to guarantee a table and avoid disappointment.

A selection of food was ordered by our hungry selves: finest Scottish haddock, chips and mushy peas, mushy pea fritters, house salad and a bowl of 'proper chips'. We washed down the food with George's lemonade and dandelion and burdock.

Although the restaurant was busy, we didn't have to wait long for our food and the service was friendly and attentive. The elegant quirkiness of the restaurant's interior design is carried through to the presentation of the food: chips are placed in a metal scoop on the plate, and mushy peas come in a jar.

Of the items we ordered, we found the mushy peas and the mushy pea fritters to be the most delicious. The pea fritters come in a serving of three, so can be a starter, or to share, or else provide part of a vegetarian main meal.

The fish (which came with some very tasty homemade tartare sauce and some pickles) had a very good, light and crispy batter, but was a tad too firm around the edges.

The chips were cut surprisingly small, and seemed rather chewy, with far too many shards. They might have tasted better had they been a bit hotter.
