Ruddington Fish Bar, Notts

Do you remember the revelation several years ago when a well-known high street retailer decided to round off their prices and avoid the ridiculous 99p that resulted in having to reward each customer with pennies as part of their change? The Chip Fiends were reminded of this on a recent visit to Ruddington.

Ruddington is a picturesque village on the outskirts of Nottingham with its own country park and steam railway. There is also a framework knitting museum, several independent shops and numerous pubs. If you are visiting the village, Ruddington Fish Bar is highly recommended for a delicious takeaway meal.






Although they also serve pizzas and kebabs, the selling of fish and chips is clearly their priority, with haddock, cod and plaice all being on the menu. The haddock is available as large and mini.

The Chip Fiends ordered haddock, chips and curry sauce, and chips with mushy peas. An extra dollop of ketchup from a sachet accompanied one meal. The shop was very busy in the early evening but five members of staff were frying and serving with great efficiency. All the food was fresh and being replenished with speed.












Sitting on a bench near the shop we gave our evaluation. The chips were delicious. Chunky, pale, crispy on the outside, light on the inside. The mushy peas, firm and not too runny. The curry sauce, thick and tasty with the occasional piece of dried fruit. The haddock was expertly cooked. A relatively dark batter, but crisp and light. The fish itself in lovely big flakes. This is somewhere we would definitely like to return again.


















One of the things that struck us as unusual about Ruddington Fish Bar was the eccentric pricing system (displayed on hi-tec flat screens, by the way). Everything seemed to end in a nine. For example, chips at £1.59, fish at £4.49, and so on. We are sure customers will read these prices as £1.60 and £4.50 and won't mind paying an extra penny for the delicious food and very good service.
