Hightown Fish and Chip Shop, Mossley, Congleton, Cheshire

We ended up here by accident this time. We did intend to visit this shop at some point as we'd heard good reports.
Anyway, the food we had here was very nice.

As we came from Congleton railway station there were a couple of gentlemen loading mountain bikes into a van and one declared "smell those fish and chips!" The aroma from the food cooking did smell wonderfully enticing.

As we approached the shop we noticed the window of the kitchen where a man was doing the frying. It was like a goldfish bowl; we couldn't help but watch the man placing battered food into the fryer.

The shop must get busy as there was a small fenced queuing system from the entrance to exit via the counter.

We scanned the menu and noticed the very reasonable prices. The fish came in three sizes; mini, regular and large. We chose the regular (£2.70), it seemed a sensible portion for lunch. Vegetarian options included the pea fritter and garlic mushrooms.

Service was efficient and friendly and we were soon munching on this delicious nosh.

The chips were medium cut and long. They were slightly overdone but very tasty nonetheless. They were reminiscent somewhat of home-cooked chips.

The fish was absolutely superb. It was so good that one of the Chip Fiends had wished they'd ordered a large portion. It's worth noting that the menu just had "fish" on it; nothing about whether it was cod, haddock or that bloke that used to sing in Marillion. It really was a good piece of fish, skinless, flaky and very fresh. The batter was excellent too; very crisp and light.

If only those men that commented on the aroma had gone to the shop, their day would have been complete.
