There's a traditional chippy in Whitby tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the holiday crowds on the 'old town' side of the harbour, but busy with a steady stream of customers nevertheless. The Middle Chippy is a favourite of those who venture towards the Middle Earth pub, which stands a few yards down the road.
Here is an idea of what's on the menu:
Homemade Fish cakes at a bargain 50p.
Whitby scampi: 6 pieces £3, 12 pieces £5, 18 pieces £7.
Haddock: small £3.50, medium £4.50, large £5.50.
Cod: small £3, medium £4, large £5.
The menu does some sums for you and displays the cost of fish and chips together. For example small cod with chips will cost you £4.50 and medium haddock with chips comes to £6. In other words, with chips the fish dinner costs £1.50 extra.
Look out for the special offer on Wednesdays - fish, chips and peas for £4.
We tried haddock and chips and a fish cake to share on our visit. The meal was accompanied by a great pile of scraps.
The chips we had were delicious, but a tad chewy. The fish had a lovely creamy taste. The homemade fish cake was very good indeed. The breadcrumb coating was very crispy and the owners certainly hadn't scrimped on the fish content. All in all a highly satisfactory lunch.
