Derby does fish and chips very well. We know this as we've been to a few chippies in this city.
The fish at Nicky's was exceptional.
We requested haddock which was cooked to order. It came out whale sized. The chips were piled high on the tray. The portion was enormous and delicious. It could have fed two people.
Nicky's is in Derby city centre. There is a restaurant as well as takeaway here.
So, back to the food. The fish came apart in large flakes. It was cooked with the skin on but the fish separated easily from the skin. It was perfect. The batter was thin and crispy. Although it was a large portion it was in no way stodgy. It was utterly delicious.
The chips were fat and pale. A little bit on the greasy side, but very tasty.
Another customer ordered a tray of chips and was also served a huge mountain of fried potato. They certainly aren't stingy at Nicky's.
