Naylor's Fish and Chips, Scarborough

Regular readers of the Chip Diaries will recall that we have commented before on the usefulness of chippies that are near to stop offs for public transport. Fancy some chips before catching the bus?... Or how about fish and chips upon arrival in a new town when your train pulls in at lunch time?

For this entry at Scarborough we thought we'd go for the nearest takeaway chippy to the railway station. The famous Wackers is not too far away, as is Mother Hubbards. However, these are both restaurant/cafes and we didn't have much time to take a leisurely meal on our visit, therefore a takeaway was what we pursued.

Naylor's on Aberdeen Walk also has a cafe, with most of the tables positioned at the back of the shop, up a few steps, including a table that overlooks behind the counter for a birds eye view of the frying.

On this day the small queue of customers were being briskly and cheerfully served by the staff who were frying fish to order.

We had haddock and chips for £4.40, and a pot of curry sauce for 60p. The server asked all the customers if they wanted scraps, so we went for this option.

After leaving the shop we went to find a bench near the post office. An elderly lady proclaimed "You can't sit there!"
"Why not?" We asked tentatively.
"Because you've got fish and chips!"

We wondered if she was offended by the smell of fried food, but at this moment one of her friends - who was standing nearby - started to laugh. It was then that we thought perhaps she didn't want to be tempted by the seaside town's staple diet.

"You can have a chip if you want" we offered.
"No thanks, I've just been to McDonalds" she replied... continuing "It's bad enough living here!"

She then left us to dig into our lunch.

The skinless fish was perfectly steamed inside the dark batter, which was thin and crisp on top but a tad moist underneath. The chips were long, thin and pale, with a few too many chewy shards. The piquant curry sauce (with sultanas) perked the chips up a bit.

At the time of our visit to Naylor's the menu included these items at these prices:
Cod and chips £4.60.
Spam fritters £1.25
Scampi 8 pieces £3
Mushy peas 60p
