Fritters

How many of you plump for a fritter as an alternative or accompaniment to fish with your chips?

Potato fritters. Referred to as 'scallops' in some shops, these make a nice alternative to chips and go very well with a dollop of mushy peas.

Mushy pea fritters. These used to be scarce but are now becoming increasingly common. A good veggie option and a favourite of the Chip Fiends.

Pineapple fritters. A traditional chippy staple to add a piquant touch of sweetness to your dinner, and good to share. We have seen a banana fritter available on a children's menu in one traditional chippy. This is a rarity as banana fritters are usually found on 'Chinese' restaurant and takeaway menus as a dessert.

Finally, the Spam fritter. Not all chippies serve them, but they make a good alternative to the battered sausage! We remember them as rectangular slices of pink Spam fried in batter for school dinners, or at chip shops, in our youth. However, some chippies serve them as battered discs. Slightly rubbery, but with that unmistakeable salty Spam taste.

Be daring and flip out for a fritter next time you go to your local chip shop...
