Fish and Chip Co, Leicester Forest East

The people of Leicester Forest East were blessed the day this fine shop opened. It has a modern look with stylish white tiles, retro lighting and a large open kitchen.

Easy to read screens display a menu of traditional chippy food alongside some items you're less likely to see in most chip shops; battered halloumi is a great option for vegetarians. There is also a specials board that, on this occasion, had a wild boar and Stilton burger at an inexpensive £3.95.

One of the Chip Fiends ordered cod, chips and mushy peas and t'other ordered haddock, chips and masala curry sauce.

The shop has a couple of tables with stools and we decided to eat in. The food was cooked to order. This Fiend's eyes popped out of their sockets when they spotted the fish coming out of the fryer, it looked so good.

The meal was served on a metal tray with napkins and cutlery. We were asked if we wanted our sauces poured on the chips or served on the side.

From first glance we could tell this was going to be excellent food. The chips (fried in rapeseed oil) were cut thick, square and very crispy on the outside. Not one hint of grease. The perfect chip. The fish portions were also cut thick, the cod being around 4cm at its most plentiful end. The batter was very crunchy and light.

The mushy peas were very thick and full-flavoured. The delicious masala curry sauce had extra spices and a real kick to it. Regular curry sauce is available for those with a more delicate constitution.

If you find yourself in this part of Leicestershire wanting high-quality fish and chips you know where to head.
