Bardsley's of Baker Street, Brighton

There aren't enough superlatives to describe Bardsley's. A Brighton establishment that is equal parts restaurant and takeaway, but serving restaurant quality food with a fine attention to detail. Opened in 1926, there are press cuttings on display from the national newspapers that have visited the chippy.

This Chip Fiend visited at tea time just as the takeaway counter started to get busy but before the restaurant crowd arrived. Most of the tables were reserved from 7pm so it was ok for me to sit inside for my meal.

Bardsley's are very keen on their huss (another name for rock salmon) and the waitress pointed it out on the specials board at £10.50, recommending it as locally caught. I'm not very partial to it so plumped for medium haddock, chips, mushy peas, tartare sauce and a mug of lovely 'builder's' tea.

The cod and haddock portions (including chips) come in 4 sizes: child's £8.20, medium £10.50, large £12.25, and double £18.90. The medium haddock was plenty big enough for me!

The fish was firm, fresh with a pleasing squeak on the teeth. The chips, straight-edged, golden and delicious. The peas - served on a saucer - were equally fresh tasting. All was perfectly complemented with a generous portion of tartare sauce.

Bardsley's also serve starters including whitebait £5.50, and sides such as a gherkin at £1.15, which is large and comes ready sliced on a small plate.

The extensive fish menu includes plaice, skate and salmon, and you can choose to have it fried or grilled. There's an intriguing sounding Bardsley platter (from £29.95). I bet that's a sight to behold!

Bardsley's is a ten minute walk inland from the seafront but well worth it.
