Poppies, Spitalfields, London

We finally made it to the famous Poppies. We'd been looking forward to this day for a long time.

Poppies has won numerous awards over the years. You can read all about this and the history of the restaurant on their website.

We arrived at lunchtime without pre-booking a table. We recommend you book as it does get busy, luckily we were early enough to get a place next to the sparkly jukebox.

Yes, retro is the look here; 1950s to be exact and it's very cool. Right down to the serving staff; polka dot dresses and headbands for the girls, shirts bearing the Poppies logo for the boys. The staff here are attentive and polite, everything you want from a great restaurant.

There is also a takeaway service where they present your food in a Poppies newsprint box. There are some benches outside so you don't have to wander far and can eat your chips before they get cold.

We weren't in the mood for a big meal so chose the regular sized haddock and had a gherkin as a side. The haddock (skin on) was presented with a wedge of lemon and individual pots of ketchup and tartare sauce.
A waitress came over to the table with a giant pepper mill and peppered the chips.

The batter was the light and crisp type we enjoy. The fish was super fresh and delicious. The chips were chunky with a crisp outside and fluffy on the inside with no hint of grease. They were perfect.

When the bill was presented it came in a small frying basket with a Poppies branded wipe and some retro sweets; Black Jacks and Fruit Salads.

Poppies also have restaurants in Camden and Spitalfields Market.
