Brenda's Fish and Chips, Sheffield

Anyone familiar with Sheffield eateries will have heard of Brenda's. A no-nonsense chip shop with cafe tables, it's a stone's throw away from the pedestrianised Moor.

On the busy Friday lunchtime that this Chip Fiend visited, there was a notice on the wall inside the chippy saying that the local council wanted Brenda's to remove their sign from the Moor. The notice reassured customers that if there was no sign on the Moor this did not mean that the chippy would not be open on the usual Monday to Saturday!

The A-board was still up on the day I visited and it was the advertised lunchtime special that I went for.

A bargain-priced £3.50 for small cod, chips and peas (although you could swap this for curry sauce, beans or gravy if you wanted).

A juicy portion of fish, some lovely medium/chunky chips - crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside - and a smashing dollop of peas.

This was a sensible sized lunch meal, but there's an opportunity to go bigger with a £3.80 haddock, or £3.50 Plaice plus chips at £1.30.

There is a pie, peas and gravy meal for £2.20, and you can wash it down with a mug of tea at 70p or add a bread cake for 40p.

You can take your food away or eat in at no extra charge.
