William Walton Traditional Fish and Chips, Anstey, Leicestershire

There's an interesting notice on the wall inside this glorious chippy that gives a pocket history of the place. We won't repeat it here, just look at the photo below.

William Walton is tucked away in the village of Anstey. On entering the premises one cannot help feeling an overwhelming surge of joy. There's a perfect blend of Old Fashioned (Traditional, if you like) with the modern. Old scales where portions of fresh fish are weighed before being battered and fried, a cabinet of curiosities including an old Players No. 6 cigarette packet, shelves of pickled eggs, beetroot and onions, an old radio...

The menu here is extensive. Cod and haddock share the fryer with whitebait, calamari, lemon sole, plaice, black pudding, vegetarian sausage, battered mushrooms and pea fritters.

The Chip Fiends chose haddock, chips, mushy peas and a pea fritter.

The haddock was cooked to order with the skin on and the food was wrapped in the usual unprinted paper plus (surprisingly) an outer wrapping of printed newspaper. The batter was very light with delicate crunch, the haddock had that fresh from the sea flavour one associates with seaside chippies. Utterly delicious.

The chips were a thin to medium cut and a pale yellow gold in colour.

The mushy peas were very thick and tasty. One of the Chip Fiends wasn't so impressed with the pea fritter, it appeared to be something bought in rather than home made.

If you're ever in the borough of Charnwood look for this yellow van with a sign pointing you in the direction of this chip shop.
