The Magpie Cafe, Whitby

The Magpie Cafe is just as famous for its queues as it is for its fish and chips, being such a popular stop for holidaymakers to North Yorkshire. Luckily on the day the Chip Fiends visited we didn't have to wait long, and were shown upstairs to a table with a beautiful view of the harbour.

There is an extensive menu here with everything from skate, lemon sole, gurnard, and the peculiar named 'woof'. What we really needed to try, however, was the 'traditional Whitby fish and chips' which comes as either haddock or cod.

We chose a regular haddock dinner at £12.30, with mushy peas extra at £1.50 - the latter served in a bowl containing enough for two to share.

The service was cheerful and efficient. Customers don't have to wait long here. The food was spectacular. The batter on the fish lifting in great peaks and crispy bubbles that housed a wedge of lemon, ready to squeeze. The skin-on haddock was so fresh, it fell apart in big flakes of pure white. The chips were golden and crispy, and the mushy peas, thick, with a good bite.

A generous dollop of homemade tartare sauce also lifted the meal to another level.

We went 'posh' and drank a carafe of white wine with our meal. The Magpie cafe filtered water sounds intriguing though if you don't want alcohol, pop or tea with your fish and chips.

After finishing everything on our plates, the bill came with Magpie cafe pieces of mint flavoured rock. We were told to take our time and relax, but we were eager to step out and enjoy the rest of the evening, walking off our meal around Whitby's picturesque lanes.
