Mothertown Fish and Chips, Stoke-On-Trent

Burslem, Stoke on Trent, is known as the 'Mother Town' of the six towns that became Stoke-on-Trent. Quite befittingly, this should be celebrated in the name of the local chippy.

The award-winning Mothertown Fish and Chips is inside a rather grand building that looks like a former bank, although on the day the Chip Fiends visited it was covered in scaffolding.

The chippy has several tables inside so you can eat your meal in a smart but informal cafe-type atmosphere or take your food away. We opted to sit in, and our food was served on a plastic tray lined with paper, as is rather fashionable at the moment.

One Fiend went for large cod, chips and peas. Fiend 2 went for plaice and chips with curry sauce.

The fresh, skinless cod with creamy flakes had a light batter with a satisfying crunch. The plaice came in breadcrumbs - a nice change for a chip shop serving. However, although tasty and serviceable, the breadcrumb crust was a bit hard, and the ratio of crust to fish was a bit high. As we've mentioned before, the delicate nature of plaice means that it is often difficult to fry perfectly.

The chips were smashing. Thin cut, crisp and light. The undyed mushy peas were some of the finest we've tasted and the curry sauce was good too.

All in all a very satisfying meal.

Mothertown also serve:

Battered Mars Bars and Snickers, black pudding fritters, 'foot long sausages', homemade fishcakes, calamari bites, steak and kidney pudding, and a sharing combo for two that includes mini cod, king prawns, scampi and onion rings. Sounds delicious! Food is available gluten free at an extra charge of 60p per fish.
