Rothley Fisheries, Rothley

"Still only £5 for fish and chips" reads a sign inside Rothley Fisheries; a well known chip shop in Leicestershire.

We paid a visit and looked at the menu. This Chip Fiend does find it odd when a chippy menu doesn't say what type of fish is on sale. The menu here listed "fish fillet, mini fish, plaice and cod roe." One customer in the queue asked what fish was available and was told it was cod. I'd much rather a menu state what fish is being fried. This Chip Fiend ordered plaice.

It makes sense that plaice would be available here as adjoining the shop is a popular restaurant called the Time and Plaice. So popular that booking is advised, particularly on evenings. The restaurant was busy on this visit, with oval plates being filled with fish and chips and ramekins of mushy peas.

All the fish was cooked to order for everyone in the queue. After a short wait the chips were scooped and placed into a card tray. Salt and vinegar was recommended to be sprinkled before the plaice was added to the pile.

The chips were very crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside.
The batter was just how we like it; a thin coating that complimented the delicate sweet flavour of the plaice. The curry sauce was thick and full of flavour, no chance of it falling off a chip on its journey to the mouth.
