Where did these blue plastic forks appear from?

We've managed perfectly well eating fish and chips with wooden forks for years. Now these blue plastic things are cropping up all over the place.

A couple of chip fiends overheard a conversation the other day. Two people were in agreement; ranting and dismissing the plastic fork, saying the wooden fork was adequate for the serving of fish and chips.
