The Famous Mr Chips, Rugby

You can't miss Mr Chips with its tall flagpoles with the union flag, flag of England and flag of Scotland flapping on Lower Hilmorton Road.

Interesting (some may say eccentric) paraphernalia entertains after you enter through automatic sliding doors; a small deep sea diving helmet, a scrolling LED sign "THE FAMOUS MR CHIPS", a large plastic 3D sign of a smiling fish sitting on a pile of chips and a small model railway set in the counter.

You will be greeted by a friendly man in red braces and round spectacles. Other staff wear red tabards to match the braces.

There is an extensive menu which includes black pudding, plaice, pineapple fritters and fish sizes that range from mini to humongous. The sauce pots come in three sizes, which is a rarity.

I had haddock and chips. The haddock is cooked to order here.
It was served with a wedge of lemon and two sachets of tartare sauce.

The fish had the skin on and the (orange in colour) batter was thicker than this Chip Fiend usually prefers. That said, it was crunchy and in no way stodgy. It was quite delicious and felt indulgent. The chips were medium cut and reminded me of home made ones grandma used to cook.

A very pleasant supper.
