Zan Fish, Village, Littleover, Derby

Have you been to Zan Fish?
We have. Zan Fish are in Derby. And the 'fish' is plural...

The Chip Fiends visited Zan Fish at Village, Littleover, but there are a selection of outlets including ones at Sinfin, Stenson, Allenton and Heatherton. The venue we chose was dictated by the first available bus from Derby city centre.

Zan chippies (after the family name Zannetou) have a smart, corporate style and are a combination of restaurant and takeaway. The takeaway food is served in a cardboard box with the Zan logo on.

We tried a take out of freshly fried cod and chips, and plaice and chips... We were also tempted by the homemade fishcake - maybe we will return for one of those.

The chips were perfect. Of medium thickness, golden and tasty.

The skinless cod was firm, white, and satisfying. The cod-eating fiend ate all the batter which was crispy -quite thick - but not stodgy. That fiend prefers cod to be skinless when it's a big portion, but likes it otherwise.

Plaice is a delicate fish and maybe it needs thick batter to protect it and steam the fish inside. To the other fiend the Zan batter was a parcel that needed to be cracked and peeled away to reveal the divinely sweet flesh of the fish inside. A lot of the plaice batter was left uneaten.

The good measure of a fine chippy meal is a lack of stodginess after eating, and this was the case with Zan Village. The food was satisfying and didn't leave one feeling bloated.

Just great.

To end the meal we wiped our satisfied lips on a Zan Fish paper napkin before catching a bus back into town...
