Chip Memories of Scarborough

If you are a chip lover like we are you will understand how a really good portion of fried potato can imprint itself on your memory like a joyful time capsule that you can dig up again every once in a while.

Such was the case when some of the Chip Fiends returned to Scarborough this year (2014) and recalled sitting eating chips outside Peasholm Park a few decades ago.

As children we were sitting with our family early in the evening, in this very spot (see below) where a bench was then situated.

Our family had bought chips from the shop across the road where North Bay Fisheries now stands. We can't recall whether the shop had the same name then, and we don't know if it had the same owners.

What we do recall, however, is that we turned our chip eating into a sort of game.

Every time someone walked past and looked longingly at us eating our supper, we would say "get your own!"

We could predict, nay, guarantee that every person who walked by would look at the chips - ask yourself: wouldn't you do the same? - so the phrase "get your own" turned into a mantra, muttered between each delicious mouthful.

Try it yourself. Next time you go to a British seaside resort and treat yourself to fish and chips: observe the passers-by peeking at your feast from the corners of their eyes, and say "get your own!!!"
