Gigs, Fitzrovia, London

Gigs comes with a good reputation. It's been going since 1958 and is run by Greek Cypriots. When one of the chip fiends was younger they were informed by a parent that Greek Cypriots fried the best fish and chips - and from past experience we wouldn't dispute this!

Gigs is very handy if you're near Tottenham Court Road and it has a restaurant as well as a takeaway. It also looks very clean and smart. The staff have good wrapping skills - serving the chips open in a cone of paper.

Gigs serves cod, haddock, rock & plaice. Fish starts at £5.80 and chips at £1.90.

It was to this fiend's dismay that the food had a chewy consistency on my visit. The batter was thick and had amalgamated with the fish. One could only assume that the food had been standing a while. I imagine the restaurant food would be fresher.
