Park Chippy, Cromer

Park Chippy of Cromer is a short step out of town in a residential area on Station Road, but not far from a nearby chalet park and the holiday homes at Cromer Country Club, so it serves holidaymakers as well as locals.

There are oodles of certificates on the wall demonstrating the fish frying skills of the staff, and some amusing caricatures of them too.

On the Chip Fiends' visit we noted the following items on the menu:

Chips £1.60
Haddock £3.90 or £5.40
Skinless Cod £2.60 £3.90 or £5.20
Skate £4 or £7
Roe £1
Fish cake 90p

And this unique selection:
8 battered crab sticks £2.00

Rock and plaice were also available too.

We opted for haddock and chips, cod and chips, and a pot of curry sauce.

It is pleasing to report that the fish was cooked to order - fresh and tasty after a five minute wait. The batter was excellent: thin but rising up in jagged, bubbly peaks. In the batter quality stakes, The Park probably has the edge on its other Cromer rivals.

The chips were very good quality too. Medium thickness, slightly crispy on the outside, but soft within.

On a midweek evening the shop was very busy. There were two members of staff: a server and a fryer. The server took the orders and passed a chit to the fryer. One customer asked for a free helping of 'fried bits' (batter scraps) for her partner, which the server scooped into a small bag for her.

There's a bench across the road if you want to bend your knees while you have your meal. Some customers stood outside to eat, but most seemed to be taking theirs home. A memorable experience that suffered none for lacking a sea view.
