Tommy's Fish Bar and Restaurant, Burton-on-Trent, Staffs

Tommy’s is a lovely, unpretentious chip shop and restaurant that serves inexpensive food with a smile.

Tommy’s have a takeaway at the front of the shop, and a modest seated area at the back - somewhat reminiscent of this Chip Fiend’s visit to Kerry’s at Ilkeston.

Fresh fish comes in two sizes: large or medium; and you can have it cooked how you wish: with or without batter, fried or grilled.

Restaurant prices include the fish, chips, and either peas, beans, curry or a salad.

I really fancied curry sauce and was delighted to find there were options here too: Either chip shop curry or Chinese style curry sauce. I chose the latter and the lovely lady serving warned me it was spicy.

She wasn’t wrong! It made my nose run, but it wasn’t so hot as to divert attention from it’s delicious flavour.

The rest of the meal was very good too. The fish was a tasty piece of haddock in a thin batter. The chips were chunky and tasted of fresh potato.

This was satisfying lunchtime meal and such good value for money it deserved a tip. As he speared my spent order on an old letter-spike, the owner wished me a good afternoon. “Same to you too” I replied.

Tommy’s also serve plaice in breadcrumbs, roe, and scampi, as well as fried breakfasts, tuna salad, and specials like liver and onions.
