The Golden Chip, Bury St Edmunds

Probably the friendliest chip shop I’ve ever been in. Everyone that walked in was greeted with a warm welcome and a chat.

It’s a small, traditional looking chippy but there’s space for a couple of round tables inside.

I ordered the Cod Special, which was a reasonably sized portion for lunch, served with just chips at £4.30.

I decided to eat in. The fish was cooked to order, it seemed most of the food here was, which is always a plus. Whilst I sat listening to the fat bubbling away another customer walked in declaring how cold it was outside whilst screwing his face up. He’d left the door open so the draught blew in and the shop owners could nod and smile in agreement.

The door was closed after the cold customer left with a takeaway and salt, vinegar, metal cutlery and a paper napkin were placed on my table. The food soon followed.

The batter was very impressive; super light with a delicate crunch. The cod was nice, fresh and flaky. The chips were also very crisp without any hint of grease but needed a good splash of vinegar and a decent sprinkle of salt to give them some flavour.

The super service in the shop continued as another customer parked outside was offered to be brought out his takeaway to the car once it was cooked.

A lovely little place.
