Southwell Fish and Chips, Nottinghamshire

One of the Chip Fiends paid a visit to Southwell. Very posh is Southwell. Ever been there? The place has those types of shops that sell things that nobody really needs. Lampshades shaped like giant hares and so on...

You would think Southwell would have one of those ultra-posh hipster type chip shops. Bare wood, check-tiled floors and food served on metal trays lined with logo-printed greaseproof paper.

Not so.

Southwell thankfully has a proper chip shop.

It's quite petite, has a Preston Thomas frying range, and does a thriving business when the town is busy with tourists.

I joined the queue and watched the last two fish in the cabinet get snapped up by a take-home customer along with a large portion of chips, wrapped.

As I subsequently waited for my fish to fry I watched the other customers ordering open chips which were delightfully served in cones of paper - the old fashioned way.

There is a health and safety notice asking customers not to sit their children on the counter because the hot sauces are nearby. Imagine that.

My fish, chips and peas were soon ready. I was asked if I wanted salt and vinegar on the chips before the fish was placed on top of them, and then invited to add more once the meal was complete.

The meal was served in a tray that had been fashioned out of the lid of a chippy carton. An economical way of packaging! And why not? It results in half the waste and saves costs.

I found a bench near Lord Byron's house to sit and eat but got so caught up in the meal I forgot to photograph the house.

The fish was lovely. A very fresh fillet of skinless cod in a delicious batter that had a bite like air. I can't remember having a batter quite like this before. It felt as though it was constructed out of teeny tiny bubbles.

The chunky hand cut chips were a pleasing golden yellow. Nice and crisp on the outside.

The mushy peas were the right consistency of runny, and complemented the meal very well.

I started to get a little full towards the end and had to leave a few chips and some of the tasty batter.

An enjoyable lunch!

Southwell Fish and Chip shop serve cod, haddock, mini fish, and breaded plaice.
