A Return to Chippy Sue's, Whittlesey, Cambridgeshire

We have had numerous lovely portions of fish and chips from Chippy Sue’s. As this is our ten year anniversary one of us had a look back at the Chip Diaries blog and found that we had reviewed this shop in February 2014! So how about a revisit?

The chippy hadn’t been open long when we went in. It was the day of the Whittlesey Straw Bear festival and there were the usual specials on offer as there always is on this day such as Straw Bear sausages and haggis. Tempting though these sounded, one of us simply had fish and chips, which was fried to order.

We had a pleasant chat with the staff, tinged with a bit of sadness. The Ram Inn next door has been closed down for a couple of years. On festival day there isn’t much passing trade anymore  as there aren’t many revellers in this corner of town. This shop is definitely worth taking a short walk away from the hubbub though. Plus locals started to visit after we were served.

Once the order was ready we went out to eat in the January sun. The haddock was mouth-wateringly perfect. The batter was thin and crisp with a tight formation of Knobbles on its surface. It had a slightly orangey golden colour to it. The fish inside had that just-caught taste. Really fresh and moist.

The chips were also freshly fried. Firm yet soft, melt-in-the-mouth batons of potato. They were liberally sprinkled with scraps that had been offered to me by the proprietor. Delicious.

The property developer who owns the Ram wants to build flats where the chippy is but Sue has been here for twenty years and isn’t budging.Good on yer Sue!Ratings out of 5:Fish (haddock): 5Chips: 5Shop / service: 5Bonus: scraps: 5Over all: 5
