Hobbs and Sons, The Black Country Museum, Tipton, West Midlands

A few years ago a couple of us Chip Fiends made the mistake of coming to the museum and not having fish and chips. We ended up getting them from another chippy in Tipton. Today it’s time to rectify our mistake and go to Hobbs and Sons.

This is probably the most famous chippy in the Black Country. People are always saying you can’t visit the museum without coming here.
Judging by size of the queue we were in for a treat.

It was a no frills chippy and basic menu, as it was in the days of old. They did have jars on the counter with large pickled onions and pickled eggs, though, should you feel “adventurous”.

One of us asked if the range was coal fired and the staff serving said it used to be but it’s now gas.
The service was very quick.

They do small portions but we had a regular size portion wrapped at £9.00. It is well known that they fry in beef dripping here. There was an adequate amount of hand cut chips. Delicious and fluffy inside. I could break the fish up in lovely flakey chunks.

The batter was delicious and crispy, not thick. Please note, they are not the orange battered chips that this part of the Midlands is famous for.

We sat on a wall to eat our meal, later to spot some picnic tables and the Hobbs restaurant. It was all very nice and it was a pity not to finish all the chips.
