The Crooked Fryer, Chesterfield

This is a great chippy that prides itself on frying fish to order. It’s written on their menu. There was nothing waiting in the cabinet on the day one of the Chip Fiends visited.

The menu looks very good. The Crooked Fryer sell pies by the excellent local baker Jackson’s. They sell battered chips on a Tuesday. Yorkshire fishcakes are sold here too. Unfortunately none were prepared on my visit so I had a small cod instead. Just a few minutes wait and it was ready.

This is more a take-your-food-home sort of chippy. There’s nowhere evident to sit and eat nearby. I walked about a hundred yards down the road to find somewhere to perch.

The chips were lovely. Piping hot and fresh. Medium chunky, pale golden, with a delicate crispness on the outside and fluffy centre.

The fish was portioned like a fat sausage with a nice crisp and tasty batter. Pure white cod was encased inside.

The mushy peas were perfect. Lovingly homemade and with a good runny sauce. Great for dipping the chips into.

The social distancing measures were good. There were markers on the floor advising where customers should stand, a sneeze screen at the counter, and you could pay by card. My one suggestion would be to remove the fish bowl on the counter for customers to take a fork from. I did wonder how many hands had delved in there, and carelessly I had forgotten to bring my own fork on that day.
