Chester's Restaurant and Takeaway, Chesterfield

Chester's is a substantial restaurant and takeaway somewhere between the style of George's Tradition and Wackers that the Chip Fiends have visited before. Situated on the B6507 just north of Chesterfield centre, it is easy to reach by bus or car. There's a large car parking area in front of the restaurant.

We arrived one Saturday lunchtime. It was busy. Some of the customers had booked in advance. We hadn't, but luckily there was space for us. The waitresses were friendly and attentive and it didn't take long to be served.

The fish menu here includes a wild haddock or cod meal for £10 (with chips, peas, salad and tartare sauce), or a smaller cod meal for £8. Plaice, grilled salmon, pan-fried sea bass, scampi and fish cakes are also available. The Chip Fiends opted for the haddock and a cup of tea. Chester's is licensed to serve wine, prosecco or beer if you fancy. You can have gluten free batter, and there are OAP specials available too.

The fish was excellent. On the large side but light on the tummy. Perfectly steamed inside a crisp, light batter. The chips were flattish and rectangular with a freckled look about them. They weren't quite as tasty as they looked. The peas were soft bullets in a runny sauce and were very nice. The peas and tartare came in metal pots. The tartare pot could have done with a little more content. Maybe that's why the waitresses kept asking the diners if they wanted more sauce?

After each diner had started their meal the waitresses returned to the tables to ask if the meal was all right and also if diners wanted more complementary chips. The only other restaurant we have witnessed this before was at The Time and Plaice in Rothley, Leicestershire. It was tempting to ask for more but we didn't want to get stuffed so we declined!
