Manchipster Plaice, Manchester

Regular readers of The Chip Diaries may recall that we have been trying to find a decent chip shop in Manchester City centre for quite a while. On our latest visit to the Lancaster metropolis we tried out Manchipster Plaice.

This chippy is a smart-looking establishment on the corner of Dantzic Street and Shudehill. It probably does well in evenings, but we called in for lunch and had cod, chips and mushy peas.

We waited a few minutes for the fish to be fried specially, and it was every bit as fresh tasting as  we would expect having been cooked to order.

The chippy is compact with no room for seats so we stood outside to eat. (We understand that in good weather the chip shop puts small tables outside). The proprietor saw us and came outside. He kindly guided us to a smart cafe a couple of doors away called Mr Shawarma. This appeared to be part of the same business. Inside there were some bar stools where we sat to eat our chippy fayre.

The fish was very good. Tasty and in a light batter. The mushy peas were also good. The chips were nice, but as they were cut quite thin they had gathered quite a bit of grease. (The thinner the chips, the more chance there is of oil collecting between them). They were the type of chips that are better served in a cafe with fried eggs. We couldn't manage them all.

This has been the best Manchester chippy we have eaten at so far.
