Papas Fish and Chips, Crystal Peaks, Sheffield, South Yorkshire

We did it! We demolished the Big Papa. Or at least one of us did.

Crystal Peaks is an out of town shopping destination at Sheffield. Handily there is a tram stop and many buses that stop here. The Papas restaurant is a huge, glass-fronted building with an elegant interior. Wood panelled booths, leather seats, and a tank of tropical fish are some of the features.

It was reasonably quiet when we visited just after opening time. Service was swift, attentive and friendly.Chip Fiend no.1 ordered a Big Papa meal: a huge haddock, chips, mushy peas, and three lemon wedges.

Chip Fiend no.2 had a Yorkshire fish cake, chips, curry sauce and a Hull Pattie. We shared a small pot of tartare sauce and drank tea with our meal.

The fish was stupendous in proportion and perfectly cooked. It had that fresh from the sea taste that really lovely haddock does. The batter was perfectly crisp and had lacey, stiff peaks rising from it.

The Yorkshire fish cake was one of the best we’ve had. It had a generous slice of fish through the centre of two potato slabs, wrapped in batter.

The Hull Pattie was a ball of mash potato mixed with herbs and battered. We found this less favourable as it was rather chewy - like a lump of battered rubber.

The chips were nice but a bit overdone for our liking. They were a dark golden colour and soft, but tasted fine.

Regular blog readers will know we like our mushy peas to be in a runny rather than stiff sauce and on the paler end of the green hue. The peas at Papas tasted good but had a chopped texture and were mixed thick. Despite thinning them with a few dashes of vinegar, they remained more like a solid lump and we were unable to finish them. The curry sauce was a tasty ‘Irish’ type. It was midway between runny and thick and made a good dip for the chips. The meal came at just under £35 which was good value for two restaurant meals.Ratings out of 5:Big Papa fish: 5Yorkshire Fishcake: 5Chips: 3
