This Chip Fiend popped in to The Big Fish one lunch time. The chip shop is a stone's throw away from the M1 motorway (Junction 24), and on a main road between Loughborough and Derby. It sits adjacent to a petrol station. It was hardly surprising then that the majority of customers on this day were tradespeople stopping by for their lunch break.
Only two customers were allowed in at a time. I joined the queue, but didn't wait long to enter. I ordered mini haddock, chips and peas. There are three picnic benches outside for customers (alongside parking for about three vehicles) so I went and ate there.
The food was very good. The mini fish was what some other chippies would serve as regular. The Big Fish serve their fish fresh, not frozen (as a poster stated inside). It was served skin-side up so I had to flip it over to get to the flesh. The batter was nicely thin and crisp.
The chips were medium chunky and fresh tasting. The mushy peas were very good too, and I was pleased that they hadn't totally smothered the meal. The man serving had also put salt and vinegar on first before the peas, which is always good as it means the chips are seasoned.
Although there were posters warning about the social distancing measures, it seemed to have gone kaput. As I ate I watched two customers inside the shop being joined by a window cleaner doing his work, cleaning the inside of the window. There was also a spud delivery taking place, so there were four people in the small space. I also noticed that although the staff members were wearing plastic gloves they were handling cash. I've never understood how some catering shops use gloves for hygiene but handle money, which we all know carries germs.
