Whetstone Fish Bar, Whetstone, Leicestershire

A few years ago this chippy was run by the the family of TV personality and fashion guru, Gok Wan. It had been closed for a while but now re-opened with new owners it serves Whetstone well.

The young chap behind the counter taking orders and serving had an impressive exuberance; watching him shout to the guys in the back what they needed to add to the hot fat was rather entertaining.

Yes, the food was being cooked to order.
I went for mini fish, chips and peas which came to £7.10. Another customer ordered kebab, chips and curry sauce. This also came to £7.10 so I wondered if all meals cost the same price until I noticed that a large cod here was £6.00.

The large cod must be whale sized, as my mini fish was quite sizeable; it barely fit inside the takeaway box.

I crossed the road and sat next to the village mural. The chips were chunky, the batter light and crisp. The flaky, skinless fish was delicious. The peas were more liquid than mush and tasted a tad too much of bicarb.

All in all, very good. We’ll try the curry sauce next time.
