For me, chip shops have been synonymous with Pukka Pies throughout my chip eating life. Almost every shop I've visited has had a Pukka Pies sign on it, whether it be illuminated or swinging from an A board.
I can recall the fillings way back when they just seemed to be steak and kidney, beef and onion and chicken and mushroom. Now the range has increased to include all steak, potato cheese and onion, potato and meat and chicken balti. As well as pasties and sausage rolls.
This Chip Fiend had not had a pie for a while so went to the nearest chippy to buy one for dinner. Potato, cheese and onion was new to this one so was top choice. Wrapped with chips and a pot of gravy and taken home to devour.
The soft pastry brought back memories; the flavour instantly recognisable as a Pukka. The filling was creamy and generous. It was ideal with thick cut chips and a lake of chippy gravy.
