Val D'oro, Glasgow

Our latest diary entry takes you to one of Glasgow’s oldest chip shops. Val D’oro established 1875 advertises itself as the ‘home of the original fish tea’. So that’s what this Chip Fiend ordered.

On the menu here you can choose from some of the following:

Haggis and chips
Black pudding and chips
Scotch mince pie and chips
Fish tea served with tea and bread (£6.95)
Special fish tea with tea and bread (£7.95)
Or a small fish tea at £5.30. I had the latter. It still came with tea and bread, but was a smaller portion of food.

The tea and bread came promptly. While the fish fried I noted the sleek and colourful decor. Like something from a postwar ice cream parlour. Unsurprising as Val D’oro also serve knickerbocker glories.

I also saw that Teenage Fanclub have been photographed in here. They were sharing wall space with The Great Caruso.

I was given the Scottish favourite of ‘sauce’ (brown sauce thinned with vinegar) to go with my meal. However a basket of other sauce sachets including ketchup, mayonnaise and tartare was also offered. I went with the sauce. When in Rome and all that... It goes splendidly with fish and chips, although it’s something I only have in Scotland.

The delicate fish came in a light batter. The chips were good. The slice of white bread and margarine tempered the spicy kick of the sauce.

What a great experience with attentive and friendly service. There are lots of chip shops in Glasgow city centre, but if you are looking for something slightly quirky, authentic and nostalgic this is the place to eat!
